Our pets are sensitive
#dogs and #cats are ultra sensitive when it comes to fragrances! We all like to smell nice, but scents and certain fragranced skin products can cause allergic reactions when used on or even near our pets! Due to their sensitivity, pets are more likely to show signs of dermatitis – a skin allergy that causes inflammation, itching, redness, flaking and even hair loss. Fragrances are definitely a major irritant to our pets. However, not all fragrances are harmful. Safe fragrance solutions are available for pets and we use fragrances in low concentrations which are IFRA certified. We prefer to use safer scents, and we only use just enough, while others may use more than is necessary!
Also, whilst essential oils are promoted as safe and natural and used as alternative medicine and aromatherapy treatment, they are not safe for our pets, they are the worst allergens, and many are incredibly toxic to our pets! Take Tea Tree Oil for example, this is not safe for our dogs and cats? Whilst some pet products contain this, it is only a very small amount, generally 1-2%, no more, and must be used in accordance with directions. Unfortunately, Tea Tree Oil is toxic to our pets! This essential oil, along with others, have become very popular recently. I must stress, essential / natural oils are not for dogs and cats! Also, Tea Tree Oil does not kill fleas as some products like to claim. Whilst these oils are considered organic, natural, and safe as topical treatments for humans, many are harmful, even toxic, to our dogs and cats. Several drops will poison a dog! Do not put pure tea tree oil, or any essential oil, directly on your dog or cat’s skin! Also, pets should never be in the same room as an essential oil diffuser – inhalation is equally unsafe for them. Always take your pet to the vet immediately if they have come into contact with a toxic substance! Symptoms can include: Weakness, Drooling, Skin irritation or chemical burns, Ataxia (wobbly and unsteady gait), Paresis (inability to walk), Tremors, Hypothermia (low body temperature), Collapse, Mouth ulcers, Pneumonia (from inhalation), Seizures, Increased liver enzymes, Death.
Make sure you avoid the following essential oils, both in topical pet care products and around your home: – Anise, Cinnamon, Citrus, Clove, Eucalyptus, Garlic, Juniper, Pennyroyal, Peppermint, Pine, Sweet Birch, Tea tree, Thyme and Yarrow.
